What traction really means at pre-seed
By Startup Roof Editorial · 8 October 2026
At pre-seed, nobody expects scale. Everybody expects evidence. The distinction decides who gets the second meeting.
Evidence, not vanity
Waitlist numbers, press mentions and logo collections are vanity. Evidence is a customer who paid, renewed, or referred. Ten users who return weekly beat a thousand who signed up once — and every serious investor knows how to ask the question that reveals which one you have.
The three numbers worth tracking
Weekly active usage among your real users. Conversion from trial to paid, even at tiny scale. And the reason customers give when they stay. If you can only show one, show retention — it is the hardest number to fake and the first one to matter.
How to present it
Name your customers (with permission), show the cohort curve, and state your growth honestly — including the flat months. Founders who show a flat month with an explanation read as credible; founders with a suspiciously perfect curve read as edited.
