The UAE Virtual Work Visa: Can You Live Here While Working for a Company Abroad?

The UAE's one-year virtual work visa lets foreigners live in the UAE while working for a company outside it. Here are the official requirements, how to apply through ICP or GDRFA Dubai, and how it fits into a founder's path to setting up here.

By Startup Roof Editorial ·

Many future UAE founders start the same way: they still have a job, or a company, somewhere else, and they want to spend real time in the UAE before committing to a licence. Others are already running a business registered abroad and want to base themselves here while they test the market.

For people in that position, the UAE offers a virtual work visa, a one-year, self-sponsored residence visa for people working for a company outside the UAE. This guide explains what the official pages say about it, who it suits, what you need, and how it fits into a founder's path. Facts come from the UAE Government portal and the GDRFA Dubai service page, linked at the end. We have left out the government fees; check the official service pages for current amounts.

What the virtual work visa is

The u.ae page says: "Foreigners employed outside the UAE are permitted to live here legitimately with a virtual work visa. The one-year visa allows them to enter the UAE under self-sponsorship and work in line with the terms and conditions issued with the visa."

It adds that "a foreigner may live in the UAE while working for a company outside the UAE."

The GDRFA Dubai service page describes it in similar terms: when a foreigner engages in remote work for an organisation outside the country, "they are given a residence permit for virtual work without a guarantor or host inside the country for a year, subject to renewal."

Three points stand out:

  1. It is self-sponsored. You don't need a UAE employer or a family sponsor.
  2. It lasts one year, and GDRFA says it is subject to renewal.
  3. The work must be for an organisation outside the UAE.

The official requirements

According to u.ae, to apply to ICP you need to provide:

  • a copy of health insurance
  • a medical fitness test result
  • proof of work outside the UAE
  • a salary certificate of a minimum of 3,500 US dollars or the equivalent in foreign currency.

The GDRFA Dubai page lists the documents for a Dubai application as compulsory:

  1. a coloured personal photo
  2. a copy of the passport
  3. a copy of health insurance
  4. the result of the medical fitness test
  5. proof of remote work outside the UAE
  6. a salary certificate ($3,500) or its equivalent in foreign currency
  7. an ID receipt.

Its terms and conditions add that the applicant must prove the work is being done remotely with an outside organisation, and must provide documents proving they make at least $3,500 (US) a month or the equivalent in other currencies. GDRFA notes that the required documents may differ depending on the data entered in the application.

Where to apply

The u.ae page says you can apply for a virtual work visa to:

  • the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), or
  • the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai.

The GDRFA service page lists three channels: its digital channels (website and smart app, with login through UAE Pass or a username), Customer Happiness Centres, and Amer service centres. The digital service, it says, is available 24/7. GDRFA lists the expected completion time as 48 hours.

Our post on UAE Pass explains how to set up the digital identity that many of these services use.

After the visa

The GDRFA page says the grace period to stay in the country after the residence permit expires or is cancelled is 60 days.

Who this visa suits

People exploring before founding

If you still work for an employer abroad, the virtual work visa can let you live in the UAE while you learn the market, meet people and validate an idea. Our posts on customer interviews and validating a startup idea cover how to use that time well.

Founders of a company registered abroad

If your company is registered outside the UAE and you work for it remotely, read the requirements carefully. You need proof of work for an organisation outside the UAE and a salary certificate meeting the threshold. Check with ICP or GDRFA how they treat an applicant who owns the foreign company that employs them.

People who already plan to set up here

If you already know you want a UAE company, the virtual work visa may not be the right route. Once you hold a UAE licence, other residence options such as investor or partner visas may fit better. Our posts on investor and partner residence visas and on the Golden visa for entrepreneurs explain the official criteria.

The important limit: work outside the UAE

The virtual work visa is built around working for a company outside the UAE. It is not a licence to trade in the UAE.

If you start selling to UAE customers, invoicing UAE clients or running a business here, you need the right UAE licence. Our post on how to start a business in Dubai walks through the steps, and "Free zone vs mainland" helps you choose a jurisdiction.

A simple preparation checklist

  1. Confirm your employer or company is outside the UAE and can issue proof of remote work.
  2. Get a salary certificate showing the monthly income required.
  3. Arrange health insurance valid in the UAE.
  4. Check your passport and photos meet the requirements.
  5. Choose ICP or GDRFA Dubai depending on where you will live.
  6. Set up UAE Pass for digital services.
  7. Book the medical fitness test as part of the process.
  8. Put the expiry date in your calendar, along with the 60-day grace period.

Common mistakes

  • Treating it as a business licence. It covers living here while working for an organisation abroad.
  • Relying on old blog posts. Requirements have changed since the programme launched; check u.ae and GDRFA.
  • Using unofficial "visa agents" without checking. Apply through the official channels listed by ICP and GDRFA.
  • Forgetting renewal. The visa lasts a year.
